What is LVL ?

Laminated Veneer Lumber, LVL is a type of board made by rotary cutting or planing logs as raw materials, drying and gluing them, and then assembling them into parallel or mostly parallel patterns, followed by hot pressing and bonding. It has structural characteristics that solid wood sawn timber does not have: high strength, high toughness, good stability, and precise specifications, which are three times higher in strength and toughness than solid wood sawn timber. This product can be used for building formwork components, building beams, carriage panels, furniture, flooring, room decoration wood keel and packaging materials, etc., with a wide range of applications。

Mid to low-end products are generally used to make LVL Scaffolding Planks for scaffolding pedals, template supports for LVL Formwork Beams, furniture, door panels, and product packaging. High end products are used to make beams, columns, and structural LVL Beams for wooden structures. If there is a high requirement for strength, it is best to use an LVL structure. LVL generally has two types of forces: front and side, and there are generally two types of strength testing: static bending strength and elastic modulus.

What is LVB ?

LVB = Laminated Veneer Board (LVB is a special form of composition in LVL, which involves adding several layers of transverse fibers in the same direction.LVB also has a different arrangement of wood veneer and is similar to the structure of plywood. However, the number of wood veneer arranged horizontally and longitudinally each time is not uniform, which is determined according to specific needs (such as 3 horizontal, 2 vertical, and 3 horizontal)

What is plywood ?

Plywood is a three-layer or multi-layer board like material made by rotary cutting wood segments into veneers or planing wood into thin pieces, and then bonding them with adhesive. It is usually made of odd numbered veneers, and the fiber directions of adjacent veneers are perpendicular to each other. Plywood is one of the commonly used materials for furniture, and is one of the three major artificial boards. It can also be used as a material for airplanes, ships, trains, automobiles, buildings, and packaging boxes.

In order to improve the anisotropic properties of natural wood as much as possible, and to make the characteristics of plywood uniform and stable in shape, generally, plywood must adhere to two basic principles in structure: first, symmetry; The second is that adjacent layers of veneer fibers are perpendicular to each other. The principle of symmetry requires that the veneers on both sides of the symmetrical central plane of plywood should be symmetrical to each other, regardless of wood properties, veneer thickness, number of layers, fiber direction, moisture content, etc. In the same plywood, single tree species and thicknesses of veneer can be used, as well as different tree species and thicknesses of veneer; But any two layers of symmetrical veneer tree species and thickness on both sides of the symmetrical central plane must be the same. The back panel allows for different tree species.

To ensure that the structure of plywood conforms to both of the above basic principles, its number of layers should be odd. So plywood is usually made into odd layers such as three, five, seven, etc. The names of each layer of plywood are: surface veneer is called surface board, and inner veneer is called core board; The front panel is called the panel, and the back panel is called the back panel; In the core board, the fiber direction parallel to the surface board is called a long core board or middle board. When forming the cavity slab slab, the panel and back panel must face outward tightly.

Different assembly methods

1.) The veneer rotary cutting thickness used for LVL laminated veneer lumber is relatively large, generally above 3 millimeters; The veneer is glued together in the direction of the grain.

2.) Plywood, on the other hand, is assembled based on the principle that the grain of the veneer is perpendicular to each other.

3.)LVB

LVB=Laminated Veneer Board (LVB is a special type of panel in LVL that adds several layers of transverse fibers in the same direction). LVB also has a different arrangement of wood veneer and is similar to the structure of plywood. However, the number of wood veneer arranged horizontally and longitudinally each time is not uniformly arranged, which is determined according to specific needs (such as 3 horizontal, 2 vertical, and 3 horizontal)

Emphasize Essential differences

1.) LVL is mainly a product aimed at replacing sawn wood, emphasizing the enhancement of longitudinal mechanical properties of the product and highlighting the anisotropy of the wood.

2. )Plywood, on the other hand, is a modification of the anisotropy of natural wood, emphasizing isotropy.

3.)LVB is a special form of composition in LVL, which involves adding several layers of transverse fibers in the same direction to a single board.

Different characteristics

1.) LVL

The production method of unidirectional billet makes LVL have advantages such as uniform structure, high strength, and good dimensional stability compared to solid wood, which can meet the requirements of wooden structure construction, bridges, furniture, and transportation.

If there is a high requirement for strength, it is best to use an LVL structure. LVL generally has two types of forces: front and side, and there are generally two types of strength testing: static bending strength and elastic modulus.

2.) Plywood

Decorative veneer plywood is one of the most commonly used materials for indoor decoration. Due to the fact that the decorative veneer on the surface of this product is made of high-quality wood through planing or rotary cutting, it has better decorative performance than plywood. This product is naturally simple, natural and noble, and can create the most friendly and elegant living environment with people.

  1. )LVB

When choosing LVB and LVL, customers mainly choose based on their usage

If the thickness is relatively thin (usually below 25mm), LVB is generally used because the addition of transverse fibers in the veneer allows for certain control over the width deformation of the board.

One important factor affecting the quality of the board is the glue. Generally, the wood veneer is similar, but the glue applied to the veneer is different, the quality is also different, and the purpose is also different, such as E0, E1, E2, WBP glue, etc.
